Wrestling: Nigeria will dominate Pummel event at African championships-official

Damian Ohaike, Technical Director of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) on Wednesday said that the country would dominate the Pummel event at the Africa Wrestling championships in Port Harcourt, February.

Ohaike said the country is a force to be reckoned with in Pummel especially at the continental level.
He said other events like the Freestyle and Graeco Roman are being dominated by countries like Egypt, Algeria and South Africa.

“In Africa, we are first in the Pummel event but Graeco Roman seems rather foreign to us, though we are catching up gradually with other countries.

“ We are not letting go, we will give these countries a fight and that is why we are training intensively’’ he said.

Graeco-Roman Wrestling is a combat sport performed on a circular mat.

Participants in Graeco-Roman Wrestling are required to use their upper bodies to execute a variety of different moves to pin their opponent and score points in order to win the fight.

Also,  Pummel means a stand-up grappling position in sports, wrestling and some martial arts while Freestyle Wrestling is a style of amateur wrestling.

Ohaike said that the 90 athletes, who would be representing the country, are currently training in Akure, Yenagoa and Port Harcourt.

The NWF official added that over 25 countries would be featuring in the event saying Nigeria was hosting to win.

The tournament scheduled to hold in Nigeria for the first time was billed for Feb. 7 to Feb. 11.
